The Opportunity:
The Division of Student Affairs invites applicants for the position of the Director of Student Life & Engagement. This position will be responsible for developing a vision and strategy for optimizing the VCUarts Qatar student community, and oversees the Student Life & Engagement team. Under the direction of the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, the Director of Student Life & Engagement will focus on student leadership and engagement, diversity and inclusion, signature events, and stakeholder collaboration. This position oversees the development, planning, execution, and assessment of the office’s critical programs and provides leadership and guidance for the advisement of VCUarts Qatar student organizations, and is a key contributor to office operational policies and budget oversight. Additionally, the Director will focus on overall student engagement levels and design, deliver, and measure means for building and maintaining engagement, contributing to the best-in-class student experience.
VCUarts Qatar:
VCUarts Qatar is the international branch campus of Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts (VCUarts). Located in Richmond, Virginia, VCUarts (www.arts.vcu.edu) is the top-ranked public art school in the U.S. VCUarts Qatar was established in 1998 through a partnership with the Qatar Foundation and offers students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design, interior design and painting & printmaking; a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history; and a Master of Fine Arts degree in design. Located in Doha, the capital city of Qatar, VCUarts Qatar is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art & Design, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Council for Interior Design Accreditation. VCUarts Qatar is dedicated to global outreach and education and provides students with an environment for cross-cultural exchange that fosters inquiry, discovery and innovation. VCUarts Qatar has 120 full-time faculty and staff and a student body of over 300 students. VCUarts Qatar was the first campus established in Education City, a unique 2500-acre multiversity campus. VCUarts:
Ranked by US News & World Report as a top-five arts and design school, VCUarts (arts.vcu.edu) includes over 3,000 undergraduate and graduate students with nationally recognized programs in design, visual and performing arts, and has an annual budget of $38 million and an endowment of more than $13.5 million. Students are taught by over 170 full-time teaching and research faculty members and the school is supported by over 60 staff members that assist in daily processes. The School includes two campuses; one in Richmond and one in Doha, Qatar. The Richmond campus is located on the university’s 75-acre Monroe Park campus situated in the city’s historic Fan District. Ultimately, the work of the School of the Arts extends globally with partnerships throughout the world and across fields as diverse as the humanities, health care and business.
Major Responsibilities:
1. Lead, manage, and develop the Office of Student Life & Engagement team members, providing general strategy, structure, and guidance for the team’s initiatives, ensuring opportunities for students to participate in co-curricular student experiences and international student engagement;
2. Oversees the planning and implantation of student related learning and co-curricular initiatives, including but not limited to orientation, service-learning, diversity and inclusion, student leadership, clubs and governance, volunteer programs, exchange and study abroad programs, and the admissions transition process;
3. Ensures opportunities for students to participate in co-curricular learning experiences. These include appropriate facilitation and supervision of club/organizational activities, student governance organizations and involvement opportunities that enhance the overall learning experience of students through the development of, exposure to, and participation in social, cultural, multicultural, intellectual, recreational, community service, and student governance;
4. Collaborates with the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, the Dean’s Office, and other campus leaders in developing and ensuring the goals of the Office of Student Life & Engagement are in alignment with the goals of VCU and VCUarts Qatar strategic plan, making recommendations for additional programming and policies to improve outcomes, operations, and services that lead to student success;
5. Participates in school-wide committees and events as a representative of the Office of Student Life & Engagement and in cross-functional projects as an advocate for the student body.
6. Encourages students to participate in student activities and leadership experiences that promotes involvement opportunities and enhances the overall educational experiences of students through development of, exposure to, and participation in social, cultural, multicultural, intellectual, recreational, community service, and campus governance programs. Serve as primary advisor/supervisor of the Student Government Association (SGA) and all operations and activities relating to SGA;
7. Manages the financial and administrative functions of the Office of Student Life & Engagement, ensuring appropriate VCU and VCUarts Qatar policies and procedures are being followed;
8. Responsible for assessing student needs and providing support to respond to those needs, working closely with and building collaborative relationships with faculty, department chairs, student leadership, and other internal and external stakeholders;
9. In collaboration with the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, conducts student assessments;
10. Trains and supervises the staff of the Office of Student Life & Engagement;
11. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
● A bachelor’s degree is required in education or relevant field
● Ability to foster high-impact educational activities for the holistic development of university students
● Exceptional interpersonal skills and experience in communicating effectively with students and a wide variety of stakeholders
● Thorough and current working knowledge of VCU administration and business practices, including familiarity with Middle Eastern cultural context is preferred
● Demonstrated leadership in developing and providing learning opportunities to students and fostering student success
● Demonstrated experience in successfully implementing and running student related learning programs. Ability to work well with students, faculty, and staff at all times
● Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills are required
● Ability to develop and maintain favorable external and internal partnerships with the various constituencies of VCUarts Qatar
● Ability to work independently while organizing and prioritizing to meet deadlines
● Ability and willingness to work evenings and some weekends including local and international travel
● Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse student environment or commitment to do so as a member at VCUarts Qatar
Preferred Qualifications:
● Master’s degree preferred in education or relevant field
● Experience working in Higher Education preferred
● A minimum of 3-5 years experience in student affairs or educationally-focused employment
● Demonstrated understanding of student learning in a co-curricular and curricular setting
